  • Medical Mission trip to Haiti

Two of our partners at Medical Studies Abroad had the opportunity to travel to Haiti for a medical mission trip from June 5-12,2010.  Dr. David and Cindy Nelson traveled with a team of doctors, nurses, and a prosthetist  from around the US, Canada and Scotland to the Mission of Hope in Titenyan, Haiti, just outside of Port Au Prince.  The stories you see on the news cannot convey the complete and total destruction of this country. One million people are living in tents forming cities among themselves. There were few businesses before the earthquake and now there are even fewer. Shockingly there is no public system of education, so only the lucky or the wealthy are able to get an education. Even more shocking is the seeming resiliency of the Haitian people. They continue to smile, the children laugh and sing songs, and life goes on.  Team 20 operated from Monday thru Friday, seeing as many patients as possible each day. Some  patients were old fractures from the earthquake, others were new injuries such as the man whos hand was amputated with a machete late one night. There was much gratification in knowing that  the suffering of a few souls was eased just a little. It's a small drop in the bucket of suffering that is Haiti, but every drop builds to an ocean that will lead to the eventual healing of this nation.

  • New Hotel Destination for 2010 and 2011

We have recently chosen a new hotel destination for our classes.  Some of the considerations that go into choosing a hotel are; price for our students, proximity to an airport, off-time leisure activities and of course, conference room facilities.  We have found a wonderful combination of all of these at the Hilton Papagayo Resort and Spa.  The Hilton Papagayo is in the mid-range of all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica, it is situated on a beautiful bay of the Northern Pacific coast, it is only 20 minutes from the Liberia International Airport, there are an almost unlimited number of activities to choose from such as deep sea fishing and zip lining, and the conference facilities are comfortable and well-equipped.  Please consider joining us in November of 2010 or one of our 3 dates in 2011. Pura Vida!

We are in the process of negotiating a new location for the hotel.  We have been researching hotels in the Guanacaste area and feel that there are several exciting options available to us.  We will post the new hotel location as soon as the ink touches the paper with the hotel.  Check back in a few days, please!

The following comments are from Dr. Golebiowski, an MD from Chicago:

I participated in the Medical Spanish course taught in Costa Rica during the month of January, and I really must say that I had a wonderful experience.  Sandra Chacon is a phenomenal teacher - patient, dedicated, and very fun.  It was also great to have smaller groups which could cater to our individual language levels... I did end up staying at the Tamarindo Diria, and it is a beautiful hotel and town.

The following are comments from a Michigan CRNA who attended the Medical Spanish Conference in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, October 2008:

Hotel: Nice.  I would stay there again even as a tourist.  Hotel staff were
all nice, polite, good service.  No complaints.

Class: Wonderful.  Sandra is a great teacher and a wonderful woman.

Social activities:  More than I had time or desire for, so no complaints
    there either.
