The Allegro Papagayo Resort is most easily reached by flying into one of Costa Rica's major airports, the Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR), in Liberia, Costa Rica.  You may book flights at MedStudyTravel or with your favorite airline.  Liberia and Guanacaste are approximately 50 miles apart, but we do not recommend first time visitors renting a vehicle in Costa Rica.  The roads are not well marked and are best navigated by local residents.

Travel FAQ’s For Costa Rica:

1. Do I need a passport?

A valid passport is necessary to enter and exit Costa Rica and must be valid for 3 months from the date of arrival.

2. Which airport do I use?

Liberia (LIR) is the closest major airport to Guanacaste. You will need to book a transfer from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the airport.  We do not recommend renting a vehicle for your first trip to Costa Rica.  The roads are not always well marked and driving yourself can be a bit adventurous.

3. Do I need a Visa?
Not if you are a U.S. citizen and staying in the country less than 90 days.

4. Embassy Contact information   www.sanjose.usembassy.gov

5. State Department website link www.travel.state.gov/passport

6. Is the water drinkable?
The water is potable in most parts of the country but it is recommended that you buy bottled water.

7. Is there a departure tax?
Yes. There is a $26.00 per person departure tax.

8. What number do I dial in case of emergency?
Dial 911 in case of emergency

9. Is tipping expected?
Most restaurants will include a 10% service charge on the bill. Taxi drivers generally do not receive a tip. If you are satisfied with the service you receive, hotel maids, tour guides and drivers would appreciate a tip. Taxis: Ask the staff at the hotel to recommend a reputable taxi company

10. How do I call a taxi?
When using taxi services, verify that they comply with the legally established requirements such as yellow triangles printed on the doors and a meter. Always ask the staff at your hotel to call a taxi for you from a reliable company.

11. What if I lose my passport?
Be proactive before your trip and make several copies of your passport and keep it in a seperate location such as a safe deposit box at the hotel. Also, scan a copy in advance of your trip, if possible, and send it to a personal yahoo, MSN or other email address that you can access in case of a misplaced passport.

12. What should I pack?
Sunscreen, bug repellant, swimsuit, light jacket for evening, waterproof shoes, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, first aid kit, including any medications you use often.

13. Are there ATMs available to make withdrawals in local currency?
Yes. However, please be sure to only use machines located in public and well illuminated places. Be careful of any offer of help or of strangers when using the ATM. Withdraw the cash, count it, and out it away before going outside. For more tips, go to www.visitcostarica.com
